Jacek Gądecki will talk about his research on gated communities as a peculiar symbol of social and cultural transformations in Poland after 1989. Present also in our city, these communities are on the one hand a fulfillment of residents’ dreams of a small, safe oasis of peace and quiet, and on the other – they represent voluntary confinement.
While describing the phenomenon of these places, Gazeta Wyborcza went as far as to liken them to the Gulag Archipelago. The article was accompanied by a survey of the readers’ willingness to live ‘behind the walls’. Predictably, opinions were split for and against.
The meeting will be chaired by Anna Miodyńska.
